Can you wear leggings paddleboarding (SUP)?

Yes, you can wear leggings while paddleboarding. Leggings are a comfortable and flexible option for water activities like paddleboarding. They provide good coverage and allow for ease of movement, making them suitable for various water sports.

It's a good idea to choose leggings made from quick-drying and moisture-wicking materials to ensure your comfort during and after the activity as you might get cold if the take long to dry. Additionally, consider wearing a rash guard or a moisture-wicking top to protect your upper body from the sun and provide an extra layer of comfort.

Do leggings keep you warm whilst paddleboarding?

Leggings can provide some degree of warmth while paddleboarding, but their effectiveness depends on the material and thickness of the leggings. In general, leggings made from thicker materials or designed for cooler weather may offer more insulation and help keep you warm. However, keep in mind that when paddleboarding, you are in direct contact with water, and wind and air circulation can affect how well leggings retain warmth.

If you plan to paddleboard in colder conditions, it's a good idea to choose leggings made from materials that offer thermal insulation, such as neoprene. Neoprene leggings are commonly used for water sports because they provide insulation by trapping a thin layer of water between the fabric and the skin. This layer warms up, creating a barrier against the cold.

Additionally, consider layering with other appropriate clothing, such as a wetsuit or a waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer, to enhance warmth and protection in cold weather. Always check the weather conditions and water temperature before heading out, and dress accordingly to ensure your comfort and safety while paddleboarding.

What about a rash guard?

I wear a rash guard for most water activities, with an SPF50 to boot, to protect my skin. Higher rise rash guards, at the neck, can help protect that soft chest skin that so many people neglect.

So yes, our recommendation is to wear a rash guard when you are out on the ocean to help protect your skin. Wear a bikini top or swimming costume underneath so that if you do get very hot, you can simply take it off (or just take a dive).

Do you wear shoes whilst paddleboarding?

The decision to wear shoes whilst on a SUP depends entirely on personal preference, the type of paddle boarding you're doing, and the conditions of the water and terrain.

Some people prefer to paddle board barefoot, especially in calmer waters or on paddle boards designed for yoga and fitness. Being barefoot can provide a better feel for the board and a more natural connection with the water. However, if you're paddle boarding in areas with sharp rocks, shells, or other potential hazards, wearing water shoes can protect your feet from injury.

Water shoes are designed to provide traction on wet surfaces and protect your feet from underwater obstacles. They are made of materials that dry quickly and are often lightweight and flexible, making them suitable for water activities.

In colder conditions or if you're paddle boarding in rougher waters, you might prefer neoprene booties or water socks to provide insulation and protect your feet from the cold.

Ultimately, the choice of whether to wear shoes while on a SUP is a personal one, and it depends on your comfort, the specific conditions, and the type of paddle boarding experience you're seeking.
